Natural lip remedies to heal chapped lips

Natural lip remedies to heal chapped lips. It is that time of the season when chapped lips become a problem for most of us. The skin on our lips is different to that of the rest of the face as it is thinner and more delicate.

Unlike the rest of the skin on our body, the lips do not have oil glands and are unable to produce moisture.
There are many factors that contribute to chapped lips. By monitoring and controlling these factors will help you treat and prevent chapped lips.

Some causes of chapped lips
The weather

Humidity levels in the air declines as the temperature cools during the winter. Dry air attracts moisture from the skin which is why chapped lips are more common during the colder months. Try and avoid cold temperatures. This can help manage your chapped lips and dry skin.

Licking of the lips

When your lips are dry you instinctually tend to lick them to apply moisture. While licking may supply temporary moisten to the lips, this can worsen matters. As the saliva evaporates, it draws moisture from the surface of the lips which is not good.

Ingredients in lip products

Lip balms or lipsticks may contain ingredients that can cause your lips to become dry. A few of these ingredients may include

  • humectants, such as glycerin
  • camphor
  • menthol
  • phenol

Humectants are substances that prevent water loss. Using a lip product that contains an allergen may cause their lips to become dry, red, and chapped.

Damage caused by the sun

Extended exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays will cause major damage to the lips area and will lead to dryness and cracking.

Sun damage can also result in a condition called actinic keratoses, which causes crusty bumps to form on the lips. While these are not life-threatening, they may become cancerous. They should be professionally removed as soon as possible.

Certain medications

Some medications, such as antihistamines, chemotherapies, and diuretics, may cause dehydration to the body as a side effect.

Some acne medications may contain ingredients, such as salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. This can cause the lips to try out.
