Zalando on major sustainable fashion drive. One of Europe’s largest online fashion retailers have just announced of their plans to cut their emissions of carbon dioxide, eliminate single-use plastics in packaging. Zalando are also pledging to market more sustainable fashion items and accessories.

In a statement released last Wednesday by Zalando’s co-Chief Executive Rubin Ritter, he said “The fashion industry is facing sustainability challenges and we know we have been part of the problem. Going forward, our aspiration is to be part of the solution,”

Zalando have already switched to renewable energy

The worldwide production of clothing has doubled since 2002. This is because people only keep garments half as long. The fashion industry accounts for roughly 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions with transportation estimated at 14%.

Rubin also admitted that their own sustainability drive could impact on their own profitability. This is because offsetting carbon comes at a cost. They want to work with brands that share their own values which will be good for business in the long run.

Ritter continued “We see a clear link between acting sustainably and continued commercial success. We believe that it will be a competitive advantage in the future.”

Zalando have already seen searches for “sustainable” fashion jump by 66% in the last year. Items they flag as sustainable fashion items have risen tenfold in the last two years to €260 million euros

Zalando are looking to achieve 20% of gross merchandise value – sales made on their sales platform by itself or its partners – from more sustainable products by 2023.

Zalando has already switched to over 90% renewable energy at its own buildings this year. It is also piloting the use of electric vehicles for deliveries.

They have already pledged to design its packaging to minimise waste and eliminate single-use plastics by 2023.

By the launch of their SS2020 collection, they hope their ZIGN private label will be repositioned as a “sustainable” brand. They are striving to meet international standards for social, environmental and animal welfare practices.
