Easy ways to make your shoes last longer. If you love your shoes, chances are you’ve probably collected your fair share of them over the years.
But it’s important to know how to look after them to ensure they last longer. After all, you want to make sure you’re getting your money’ worth.
There are several guidelines out there on how to properly care for your shoes but we’ve narrowed it down to these 7.
Go with quality
The best way to ensure that your shoes last in the first place is to invest in a good quality pair.
Add rubber soles and heel caps
The first place you will see damage is the soles. Adding a rubber sole will help keep them in optimal condition. Any shoemaker can do this for you in minutes and can match most sole colours.
If the heels are thin, you can have a durable heel cap fitted. This will prevent stilettos from wearing down.
It’s important to regularly clean and condition your shoes but that depends on the material. Leather will require a leather conditioner or lotion, while suede needs a special brush and surface protector.
Be sure to remove any dirt first before applying any care products. Try to avoid using soap or detergent. Use a moist cloth to remove dirt before applying a conditioning product.
Store them properly
Keeping them in the wrong place can cause fading, scratching and serious damage. For some of your pricier pairs of shoes, try to hold onto the boxes they came in.
Linen dust bags are also a fantastic way to store shoes, both at homes and when travelling.
Avoid direct sunlight, as this can cause fading and discolouration.
Let your shoes breathe
Always remember to switch up your shoes and avoid wearing the same pair for too long. Wearing the same pair everyday will cause them to age quicker.
Use a wooden shoes tree
These will stretch your shoes to their original shape, prevent creasing and allow your shoes to breathe. The wood will also absorb any sweat or moisture which can speed up ageing.
Stuff them with newspaper
Newspaper is a great alternative if you can’t afford to keep buying shoe trees. Don’t be afraid to be generous and really pad out your shoes as much as possible.
