How to wear sunscreen under makeup. We all know that we should wear SPF every day but wearing sunscreen under makeup is a topic that brings up many questions and concerns.
What levels of protection should you be wearing? How to reapply? Is SPF in your foundation enough?
Read on for your tips to help you protect your skin and answer your burning questions.
What SPF should you be wearing?
Ideally, SPF 30. Make sure to apply it evenly to your skin until it vanishes. It’s important to look for these three ingredients when it comes to UVA and UVB protection: zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and avobenzone.
Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are physical sunscreens rather than chemical. If you suffer from sensitive skin, look for sunscreen with those ingredients as there are less likely to irritate you. They provide a physical barrier to protect your skin from the sun.
You can wear sunscreen under your foundation. It will even act as a primer. Just remember to add some to your necks and ears.
What if your makeup already has SPF?
If your makeup already has SPF, you’re covered, right? Not really.
Don’t rely on makeup as a source of SPF as it’s notoriously unreliable. As makeup isn’t always applied evenly and comes off easily it won’t give you optimal coverage.
Applying sunscreen under foundation will give your protection and provide a better base for your makeup. Wait a few minutes before applying your foundation to allow your sun protection to set and penetrate your skin.
How to reapply during the day
If you’re sweating or swimming, try to reapply your sunscreen two to three times during the day. If you’re not getting wet, it can last up to four or five hours.
For maximum protection, you should apply your sunscreen directly onto your skin. You can put your sunscreen on over foundation but ideally, you would take it off and reapply.
We know most women don’t want to do that. An alternative is to use a loose powder with an SPF. Just don’t forget your physical sunscreen underneath your makeup and avoid staying near windows for long periods of time in the office.
