Why bike shorts aren’t just for Instagrammers

Why bike shorts aren’t just for Instagrammers. Just like leggings before them, stretchy sport shorts are the latest athletic fashion item to become a major trend.

Perhaps inspired by Kim Kardashian’s Yeezy outfits, women are finding all sorts of inspiration to test out their own version of the trend.

Even major designers have embraced the potential of bike shorts, with Fendi, Dior, Chanel and more showcasing their stylised riffs on cycling shorts on their runways.

For something so simple, bike shorts are surprisingly versatile. With the right styling tricks, they can easily be made to look elegant and classy as well as casual and cool.

But bike shorts can be tricky to get right?

The challenge seems to be getting the rest of the silhouette right. If you go too tight up top, you look like you’re heading to the gym. Too loose and you end up completely drowning out the shorts.

The right shoes play a big part of the outfit, too.

Here are some tips and inspiration to help you nail the bike short trend.

Wear the shorts with a fitted blazer

This is the easiest way to wear bike shorts. Pair some vibrant turquoise cycling shorts with a checked blazer and white accessories for an Insta-worthy look.

For something more dramatic, pair black bike shorts with a slightly oversized black blazer and white trainers. The white trainers will help to balance out the bottom half of your outfit.

To give your working wardrobe a bit of a twist, wear a serious black button-down shirt, a blazer and black cycling shorts. Top the look off with some pointed-toe shoes.

Pair the shorts with a shirt

Take the sportswear staple to feminine territory with a floral blouse. Pair some floral bike shorts with a floral blouse to shed any association with gym apparel.

A flowy short-sleeve blouse and simple bike shorts is a laidback and unfussy look. Wear with low block heels and a ladylike tote to keep your outfit looking refined.

Throw it back to the 80s by wearing your bike shorts with a statement buckled belt. Add an oversize tweed jacket, a padded headband and cocktail jewellery.
