In honour of what would be Yves Saint Laurent’s 76th birthday, the outfit inspiration for today is the classic black tuxedo.
In 1966, Yves revolutionised women’s wardrobes and defined the term “power dressing” by introducing the androgynous three-piece suit ‘Le Smoking’.
Here is one outfit that has not dated since its inception almost half a century ago. It is as relevant and iconic today as it ever was and here’s how you can pay homage to the great couturier.
Step 1. Black Blazer
A well-structured and fitted blazer is the bread and butter of this look. Black blazers can generally be found in every high street shop but for reliable tailoring, Zara can’t be beaten.
This black blazer with shoulder pads demands attention and is the perfect foundation for your outfit. Alternatively, up the ante in one of these black blazer with satin detailing.
Step 2. Black Pants
Opt for a slim fitting cigarette trouser or tapered ankle to avoid looking like you’ve just borrowed your other half’s work suit. Trousers with a sheen or satin finish always work really well with all-black ensembles. The same goes for cropped styles which show off some ankle. (Both options below from Mango.)
Step 3: Shirt
While this look can be paired with many colours and styles of shirt, for a modern take opt for a sleeveless white blouse with collar detailing. Bow ties can be bought individually (head to asos.com) but also come attached on certain shirts which gives a certain amount of quirkiness to this look. Details like studs, embellishment, collar tips and chains add individuality to the outfit. (River Island x 2, Zara, Asos x3)
Step 4: Accessorise
As this is such a dramatic look, accessories are best kept to a minimal; box clutch bag, killer court shoes and a red lip is all you need.
