It’s a match made in fashion heaven; hip designer Alexander Wang has signed tongue-in-cheek rapper Azealia Banks as the face of his T by Alexander Wang diffusion line.
With a few questionable celebrity endorsements as of late (Avicii for Ralph Lauren and Tiesto for Guess anyone?) Previous faces of T include Santigold, Spankrock and bizarre South African duo Die Antwoord. Azealia, meanwhile, fits the Wang mould to a, excuse the pun, tee.
Twenty-eight-year old Wang, a dropout of the Parsons School for Design, has reached stellar heights after presenting his first ready-to-wear collection back in 2007. Wang’s designs have become synonymous with New York’s edgy-cool downtown style and the designer was awarded with the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund of $200,000 in 2008.
T by Alexander Wang was launched in 2009 with distressed t-shirts, racer back tanks and bandage dresses quickly became collection staples. Wang, one of the pioneers of this year’s sports-luxe trend, routinely opts for muted, solid colours and jersey fabrics to showcase his impeccable tailoring skills.
Azealia Banks exploded onto the scene in late 2011 after numerous attempts and quickly had the world talking about the expletive lyrics in debut single “212”. The fashion world seemed to embrace Azealia’s alternative attitude and her track “Bambi” was selected as the soundtrack for a Thierry Mugler show in Paris. In May, she took to the stage at the Met Ball and performed at the biggest fashion night of the year, aptly dressed as a cat.
The pairing does not come as a surprise after Wang took Harlem-bred Azealia to the Met Ball back in May. The campaign video for Fall 2012 illustrates why these pair are a perfect fit as the 21 year-old-rapper exudes energy and fierceness while performing her song Van Vogue and debuting the new season crop tops, body-con and racer back dresses.
