This years first round of Fashion Weeks brings with it PETAs new campaign. This time around they have been joined on the front lines by British designer, Stella McCartney. They will urge fashionistas worldwide to shed not only fur, but also leather by using a viral video exposé showing the brutality of the skins trade hosted by McCartney. "As a designer, I like to work with fabrics that don't bleed; that's why I avoid all animal skins," says McCartney in the video. "Please join me in exploring the huge variety of fashionable shoes, belts, purses, and wallets that aren't the product of a cow's violent death."
Compassionate trendsetter, Stella’s modern and feminine designs are stocked in stores around the world. Her own namesake line has put stars like Charlize Theron, Penelope Cruz, and Kate Winslot on the ‘best dressed’ lists time and time again. All the while Stella has kept her award winning collections free of leather, fur, and other skins. As a committed environmentalist she was named the first ever Green Designer of the Year by the Accessories Council.
The campaign was set to debut in Manhattan cabs as style editors and buyers fly between shows in taxis during Fashion Weeks. PETA planned to run a video blitz on taxi video screens, but VeriFone Media, which places the cab ads refused to sell ad space to PETA. They said that the screens run consumer promotions and not cautions. Never the less PETA will launch the video via fashion blogs, celebrity tweets, and on Facebook pages of PETA’s million-plus activists.
The video is not made in mind of the faint hearted. It is made with the purpose of shocking people and exposing the brutal work ways of slaughterhouses. PETA have also released their new anti fur poster campaign the ‘Give Fur the Cold Shoulder’ campaign, with Penelope Cruz being the latest celeb to bare all for the cause. So where do your morals lie in regard to animal rights and fashion? Are you pro or anti PETA?
