For onlookers at the Mulberry autumn winter 2012 show at Claridge’s on Sunday morning, it was clear who creative director Emma Hill was inspired by. Monsters. Citing “Where The Wild Things Are,” the original 1960s children’s book by Maurice Sendak, a star studded audience were treated to a hair raising show. Those in attendance sat on fur rugs and the catwalk entrance was flanked by two large productions of the “Mulberry Monster.”
As for the collection, Mongolian goat hair fur was used in abundance, on everything from gilets and coats to skirts. Voluminous layers were clinched with waist belts, and cosy knits with embellished sleeves and tiger print peered out from under shaggy vests and shiny macs, paired in some cases with glossy pencil skirts.
Cuddly vests in teddy bear fur were teamed with lace skirts and an overall colour palette of tan, orange, black and grey was evident
Tangerine quilted jackets with bright blouses emblazoned with cutesy monster print brightened things up. And sculpted bra plate dresses in autumn orange, black leather and muted tie die with lace bodies and skinny belts look set to spawn countless High Street replicas.
Oversized chunky woollen scarves featured; good news for those of us who will be enduring winter’s freezing conditions.
The British brand has also been making headlines for the unveiling of its latest arm candy, the Del Rey. Inspired by sultry American singer, Lana Del Rey, the bag will become available in May. It is the first celebrity inspired collaboration since the best selling Alexa satchel which sells for £750 a pop and contributed to Mulberry sales being boosted by 57%.
