This is one for the ladies out there and this week, Fashion.ie caught up with Mr World, Kamal Ibrahim from Limerick who is currently working in Australia and dating former Miss Australia the beautiful Sophie Lavers. When the Irish model Kamal is not posing for the camera he is busy doing charity work for many organisations around the world. Lads, if you want to look like Kamal the trick is stay away from the sweets and fast food and do a little work-out every day. Kevin O’Brien chats to the likeable and down to earth Limerick guy about his day to day life and love for fashion.
Where did you grown up?
I grew up in Limerick City in a small area called Thomondgate.
How would you describe yourself in three words?
Ambitious, driven, yet sensitive.
How did you get into modelling?
By accident, I went to an Ann Summers charity fashion show. At the interval I got speaking to the model agent for the show that persuaded me to get up on stage
You won Mr World back in 2010, how did that moment feel?
Like I won the gold medal at the Olympics. I was overwhelmed with pride. It felt so good to be Irish that day.
What role does and duties does Mr World do throughout the world?
The role of ‘Mr World’ is that of an ambassador. I represent the organisation all over the world. My duties, just like the organisation is primarily a charitable one. I have travelled to Asia, America and Australia helping to raise funds for children’s organisations. I do this through presenting, speaking or just being present at various events.
Do you remember how old you were when you started caring about how you dressed?
Yes, I was 19. when I started modelling even then I rarely bought anything new. It was only after I won Mr Ireland in 2009 when I really started to make an effort.
What are your favourite colours?
I can’t say that I have one, although if I go by my wardrobe I’d have to say... blue.
What is your favourite piece of clothing?
A fitted blazer or a really good fitted shirt.
Who do you consider great fashion icons?
That question depends on what your own particular style is, for me, I think Will Smith is one of the most stylish men out there.
Describe what you like to wear for casual nights out?
Shirt, Jean and shoes with a sports jacket or jumper over the shirt.
Where do you normally shop for clothes?
Selected Homme are one of the few clothing brands I’m wearing, mixed with a few items of Tommy Hilfiger. I personally find that “Selected” have the best quality clothes and good prices and most importantly, they are fitted and buy them in Brown Thomas.
How do you manage to stay in great shape?
Time, effort, dedication and discipline.I’m in the gym 3-4 times a week but most importantly I eat extremely healthy. Almost no fast food and very little sweets.
What do you look for when trying on clothes?
The fit and how the clothes hold your figure. Clothing isn’t meant to cover you up. It’s meant to show you off, remember that one.
You do a lot of charity work, what does this involve?
That’s right, I do a lot of charity – mainly for children’s organisations – although that’s just a personal choice. I do it because I can see that it makes a difference and it involves mainly my time although I make contributions too. I speak on behalf of the organisation(s), do some “Meet & Greets” make appearances etc.
Do you shop for what's trendy or what works best for you?
I only ever look for what’s best for me. What does it matter if something isn’t in season. If you look great who cares?
What is the best fashion advice you've ever been given?
I can’t say I have ever been given fashion advice that I’ve agreed with!
What is the most embarrassing moment in your life?
Doing a dance show in Limerick for a local charity with about 30 kids on stage. I missed my que to get off the stage after I was finished and got caught in a different routine. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing and it showed.
Describe your typical working day?
When I have a full week scheduled (which is about twice a month at the moment) my days are made up of many many meetings with one or more producers and agents (including mine). If I’m filming then I’ll be either on set or on location, going to the gym, blogging (which I’ve just started) and doing one or maybe two photo-shoots in the week as well.
If you knew were going to be put on a desert island for a month, name three things you would bring with you and why?
Water and peanuts (to live); a huge blanket (to keep me warm at night); and my girlfriend... for company
Who inspires you?
Will Smith for his talent and lifestyle and Nelson Mandela for his strength, courage and values.
How do you spend your free time?
Reading (which is a new thing), playing games or watching TV or Skydiving (my favorite).
What type of music do you listen to on your IPOD?
Everything from pop to soul and R&B. I have a broad taste and even a bit of metal and classical music is nice when I’m in the mood for it.
Who would you rate as your favourite fashion designers and why?
Paul Smith and Arthur Gallan. Both use high quality fabrics, have fabulous detail without overdoing it and all their clothes are fitted.
If you could have lunch with 3 people (past or present) who would you choose and why?
Will Smith because he’s Will Smith; Nelson Mandela because I would probably learn more about myself in that time that I ever though possible and .... Marilyn Monroe just to see if she’d fancy me
Where do you see yourself in 3 years?
I’d like to be hosting some of Ireland’s most popular TV shows like the Voice, Ireland’s got Talent and also be working between Ireland, the UK and Australia.
