Louis Vuitton’s latest outing was never going to be low-key, not after an $8 million steam train and a decadent carousel raised the bar even further last year.

For the final day of fashion month, models descended down four escalators in an installation built specifically in the Louvre Museum’s courtyard onto a glossy yellow and white chess board. In a show that took a mere 8 minutes to present 64 looks, creative director Marc Jacobs managed to tie together many of the trends we have seen over the last month; a-line hems, mod chequered prints and monochrome.

More often than not there is a correlation between the Marc Jacobs collection in New York and the Louis Vuitton spectacle shown in Paris three weeks later. While he kick started the striped trend with his paired-back mod collection earlier this month, this time, 60s style Mary Quant designs appeared to be his referencing point.

The collection was inspired by French conceptual artist Daniel Buren, who also designed the chess board catwalk. While Jacobs told the press, "I can't seem to avoid a reference when I design, but it wasn't meant to be 60s. The beehive hair probably aided that"- one couldn’t help but think that the chequered designs, prim hair bows and pointy kitten heels would have surely been a hit with the likes of Edie Sedgwick and Twiggy.

Long sleeved crop tops, mod minis, pencil skirts and pea coats formed the basis of the collection. There were also maxi and midi skirts resting on the models’ hips, boxy jackets, buttoned up collared macs and simple shifts, all contributing to a sweet and innocent vibe.

For the first time in LV history, the iconic monogram was absent from the collection. Jacobs instead chose to focus on the LV damier squares.

The only prints that appeared were bold flowers on silky fabrics and at the end of the collection came darker outfits which sparkled under the light thanks to the smallest sequins the world has ever produced.

As for emulating this mod look on the High Street, I suspect we will be seeing skirts and dresses inspired by this laser cut detailing seen below come next season.

Check mate!
