Not long ago the only place you would see a celebrity at Fashion Week was in the front row, then along came the Olsen Twins and Victoria Beckham to prove that famous folk can produce a commercially successful fashion line. While much talk is of Beckham after her success on the runway this week it appears she has a little competition from former bestie Katie Holmes, who made her debut at Fashion Week with her Holmes and Yang SS13 collection.

With a 14 piece collection designed with partner Jeanne Yang, the show was in sharp contrast to Mrs Beckham’s earlier this week – A-List names and Anna Wintour were nowhere in sight and the media were warned to stay away unless they had an invite. Instead of strutting on the catwalk the models displaying the wares were placed on pedestals and each outfit was assigned to a model on the basis of their personalities.

Like Beckham’s collection many of the pieces were inspired by the designer’s personal style, but while the ex-Spice Girl's brand has evolved this season with the addition of new elements Holmes and Yang’s ready-to-wear  – a mix of masculine and feminine using luxe fabrics - is pretty but nothing to get too excited about. The beaded jumpsuit, a quilted jacket and caramel capelet were strong as separates and the dresses had a cute, classic feel but the pick of the bunch was the James Dean inspired leather motorcycle jacket and I have a feeling it’ll be Holmes and Yang’s most popular piece.

The show was the first major public event for Katie Holmes since her split from Tom Cruise. Elegantly dressed in skinny black trousers, a cream blouse and leather jacket, she was seen adjusting the models and happily posing with her business partner, indicating she’s as hands on with her brand as she says she is.

The reviews are in and they are mixed, but it’s unanimously agreed that while the collection feels incomplete, the separate pieces made a favourable impression on the fashion world and they want to see what's next to come.
