The infamous Yves Saint Laurent name has always been synonymous with high-class fashion and holds an incredibly high esteem, not just in Parisian fashion but on the international industry scene also.

Founded in 1961 by Yves Saint Laurent himself and former partner Pierre Bergé, the brand is known for creating staples like thigh-high boots, silhouettes and classic tuxedos for women and was famously the first designer to use black models in their catwalk shows.

Over the years, Yves Saint Laurent has been under the management of some huge names in fashion: Alber Elbaz of Lanvin, Tom Ford and Stefano Pilati. But in February 2012, Hedi Slimane was named as creative director of YSL, his first term under this position but not the first time he had worked for the fashion house having served two years as Collections and Art Director in 1997.

Controversy hit YSL in June of this year when Hedi Slimane changed the name of the Yves Saint Laurent brand, in a move that could have been a huge risk so close to his debut collection with the company. The newly named Saint Laurent Paris angered critics and fans alike who are saying ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ and it takes from the integrity of the creator himself.

With a debut collection that got mixed reviews across the board this week and criticism amounting from the name and logo change for the ready-to-wear collection, we can only wonder, is Hedi Slimane regretting the Yves that got away?
