It's really time to throw out the rule book when it comes to clashing. It's a great time to have fun, raid your wardrobe and see what's lurking around. My basic rule for this trend is "if it looks like it probably wont go well together...most likely it will". By all means, clash vibrant colors and tribal prints, introduce another of this season's hottest trend (leopard print) into the mix and your on to a winner, like the ever trendy Jessie J below.
Miss J accessories the look to perfection with a fur stole and chunky gold jewlery, her sleek hair, well defined eye's and deep red lipstick are so hot. Notice how the red lips mirror the red flashes in the leggings? This lady is drawing attention to the face, using make up as a nod to the outfit, making this look pop.
The gorgeous Diane Kruger goes all out in this eclectic ensemble, she has cleverly taken a pretty average emerald green dress and thrown a crazy zebra stripe pencil skirt over the top of it!!!! Normally, I would hate this look, the skirt peeks out the bottom (signalling poor styling)...this would be a huge fashion faux pas in many cases. However Miss Kruger is cleverly making the most of her boyish figure utilising the freedom this trend brings. The zebra skirt nips her in at the waist and the print gives the illusion of a womanly sillouette. While the understated hair and make up and minimal accessories ensure Miss Kruger still has a pretty edge. The mustard colour shoes, clash very well with the green dress, letting us know that this outfit had some thought behind it. A look like this could easily be pulled off by us normal folk.
The ever stunning Bip Ling makes a bold clashing statement by teaming tartan blazer over a kookie pastel blue summer dress. This look is so cute and young, the pulled back hair and pop of red lippy make the look vibrant. This look is testament to how effortless thowing one print over another and looking on trend can be.
I'm quite excited to raid my closet and see what I can find. This look should make me look like I just fell into the laundry hamper, its fun and the trend is transient so use it while its still in vouge!
I had to of course mention one celeb who I feel didnt quite hit the nail on the head. Florence Welch below, who was spotted in this clashing outfit in Venice at the Womens Tale's premiere. This look is from Miu Miu's Autumn/Winter 2012 collection and is straight from the runway.
This look is just wrong. The shirt is pretty on it's own, but teamed with these pants (which are the wrong length for a tall lady like Flo) only adds to the harshness of the look. Poor Florence looks tired, her bare face and uncombed hair drag the look down further, the shoes are nice but not teamed with the cropped trouser. The bag is dull and although cobalt blue and electric blue's are set to be huge for Winter 2012, the colour does not pop.
Final suggestions:
When clashing prints make sure that your make up and hair are groomed, that the cut and tailoring of the garment's you choose flatter your shape and that you choose the right key accessories to bring out the best in all the prints that you use.
