Thanks to the macabre vibe at McQueen, Givenchy, Gucci and Versace to name but a few; autumn winter 2012 is the season to embrace the dark world of gothic glamour.

Forget all associations with cloaks and powdery faces; this neo-goth is all about decadence and embellishment, with plenty of lace and velvet thrown in for good measure.

The obvious starting point for this look is black; but why not go a little further by choosing opulent burgundys, emeralds and plums. Embellishment is also key, think studs, spikes and skulls and you're on the right track.

A good way to dip your toe into the trend is with a statement jacket, up the ante with a studded leather biker or this long tailored blazer with spikes on the shoulder. Studs and spikes are currently adorning everything and anything on the high street; if you fancy getting creative pick up some in a craft shop and get creative with your jaded clothes.

Lace, typically associated with ladylike outfits, has been given a dramatic makeover this season. Pair a bralet under a sheer shirt for a daring day look or with a pencil skirt after dark.

For those who snapped up some on trend leather shorts or asymetic skirts last season, they can easily be incorporated into this look. Dip-hem skirts in burgundy and teal look great with embellished tops and pair peplums with leather shorts for an edgier party outfit.

As for accessorising, channel Wednesday Adams and go all out with skulls, crosses and embellishment. While you're at it, remember no goth worth their salt is caught without a dark lip, opt for a burgundy lip for a no nonsense finish to your gothic get up.
