Its trailer has racked up an impressive 6 million views on YouTube and anticipation is mounting for its release, but Warner Brothers have just announced that The Great Gatsby will not hit screens until summer 2013.
Baz Luhrmann’s adaptaion of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel was due to be released on Christmas Day stateside and St. Stephens Day. However as Warner Brothers were dubious about the film going up against winter blockbusters such as Les Miserables and the first instalment of The Hobbit, fans will have to wait until next year to see the 3D masterpiece.
A release in summer 2013 will mean that the film will be competing with Iron Man 3, Star Trek 2 and new Superman flick Man of Steel.
The film boasts an A-list cast including Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan. The delay now means that the film will not be a contender for 2013’s Academy Awards (critically acclaimed Baz Luhrmann was nominated in 2002 for his extravagant musical Moulin Rouge.) If the stunning trailer is anything to go by, the film is a shoe-in for the best costume design award; Catherine Martin, Luhrmann’s wife, has been costume designer for all her husband’s major films Strictly Ballroom, Romeo & Juliet, Australia and won the costume design and art directing Oscars for Moulin Rouge.
The big-screen adaptaion undoubtedly influenced some of the biggest names in fashion who used the 1920s as their reference points for spring summer 2012 collections. Gucci, Marchesa, Etro and Ralph Lauren all presented us with modern interpretations of Jazz Age chic. On the brightside, a delay in release gives us more time to get working on our interpretation of art-deco worthy flapper style and come next summer we will be dripping in sequins, feathers and pearls. Daisy Buchanan eat your heart out.
