The film and fashion industry have long been hand in hand while influencing our attitudes and wardrobes. Here’s a look at some of the movies that will go down in history as the most fashionable films of all time.

A Clockwork Orange directed by Stanley Kubirk in 1971. Kubrick’s vicious futuristic masterpiece influenced a generation of filmmakers, punk rockers, and designers. But actor Malcolm McDowell couldn’t predict that pulling on his cricket whites would have the impact it did. According to McDowell, the “gang” outfits which included U.S. Marine boots that Kubrick had shipped to the UK from Washington, D.C helped shape an aspiring young clothing maker’s first collection. “I met Jean Paul Gaultier at a film festival,” McDowell recalls. “And he said, ‘Thank you very much, because that film changed my whole design.’ ”

How to Steal a Million directed by William Wyler in 1966.  A romantic comedy meets great heist movie all in one. And if a stellar story wasn’t enough the cast surely completes the package, Peter O Toole and Audrey Hepburn were a picture of perfection. Everything O Toole wears in this role fits him impeccably. The cuffs on his crisp white shirts, his narrow knit ties, he even makes a bathrobe look suave. As for Ms Hepburn, who throughout the movie is dressed from head to toe in Givenchy, still manages to outshine her handsome co star in most scenes. With each costume change came a different statement coat. The accessories worn by Audrey which showcase the best of the sixties are the pillbox hat and the round oversized sunglasses, popularized by Jackie O.

Reservoir Dogs directed by Quentin Tarantino in 1992. Nobody loves homage like Tarantino, and in Reservoir Dogs, film noir got the director’s respect. He and costume designer Betsy Heimann kept it black, white, cheap, and simple. “We were looking for the kind of anonymity an ex-con might achieve by going to a pawnshop,” Heimann says. Harvey Keitel’s suit was a gift from French designer Agnès B.; everything else came from vintage stores and bargain bins.

North by Northwest directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1959. Cary Grant’s beautifully cut world-beater of a gray suit is arguably the most legendary in the history of American cinema, and it has been seen again and again in various incarnations, from the good (Tom Cruise in Collateral) to the bad (Ben Affleck in Paycheck). Kilgour, the estimable Savile Row tailors, crafted it but likely not without some major input from the star himself. The three button suit (with a roll over lapel and no vents in the back) is worn nearly the entirety of the frantically paced film, and its impact is unparalleled.

The Notebook directed by Nick Cassavetes in 2004. A movie that I would be shocked if you haven’t witnessed! The story is of two people, Noah (Ryan Gosling) and Allie (Rachel McAdams), with different backgrounds who meet and fall in love, but other people and circumstances keep them apart. The movie is set in the early 1940′s and after the war in America. This fashion era is a favourite of most with all the playsuits, polka dots and pearls for the ladies and herringbone suit pants paired with flannel shirts and caps for the gentlemen. The beautiful fashions are only matched by the captivating onscreen imagery and landscapes.

Almost Famous directed by Cameron Crowe in 2000. Kate Hudson plays a whimsical, glamorous, free-spirited groupie (Penny Lane) in this movie, and her outfits definitely match the part. Based on Cameron Crowe’s own teen experiences, the film drips in authenticity. The clothes compliment the carefree, rock and roll attitude of the characters, alongside tunes by some of the decade’s greats - David Bowie, The Who and Led Zeppelin. Magnetic and unashamedly sexy, it is Kate Hudson’s character, Penny Lane who manages to steal every scene with her outfits. The first time we see Penny, sporting John Lennon sunnies, an Afghan trimmed suede jacket and a lace crop top, you can’t take your eyes off her. Almost Famous is definitely the movie to see a pure slice of pure Sevnties fashion heaven, and all without a single platform in sight!
