Two legendary houses of fashion were revealed to have designed outfits for the forthcoming remake of Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby”.
The eagerly anticipated reimagining of the 1974 original which starred Hollywood greats Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, is being directed by superb film-maker Baz Luhrmann, who gave us the innovative and visual masterpieces “Moulin Rouge”, “Romeo and Juliet”, and “Australia”, stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby, with Carey Mulligan as the infamous Daisy Buchanan.
This time round however, the fashion focus on the new adaptation will be extraordinary, especially with the welcome news that Gatsby’s costumes will be inspired by the elegant 1920s Prada Spring/Summer 2012 menswear collection, while according to an interview published in the September issue of Vogue with Miuccia Prada, the designer will be adapting forty dresses from past Prada and Miu Miu collections for the movie.
The designer worked closely with the film's head of wardrobe, Catherine Martin who is the wife of Luhrmann , on the Twenties style flapper dresses worn by several actresses throughout the movie.
"I usually try not to literally reference periods in my work, because that's not the way I think," Prada told US Vogue. "But when I worked on the costumes, I realised how many pieces would become very Twenties with a little intervention and another point of view."
Carey Mulligan's outfits will also be styled with Tiffany & Co's beautiful and sparkly creations.
This is not the first time that a successful partnership has been forged between the designer and the director, as Prada worked on Lurhmann's 1996 hit film Romeo + Juliet, designing a suit that was worn by Leonardo DiCaprio, who incidentally is also the main protaganist of the forthcoming adaptation.
Baz Lurhmann's reworked vision of the timeless novel first published in 1925, will hit cinemas in July of next year.
