How to Do a Homemade Hot Oil Treatment

If your hair is damaged, dry and frizzy, you know what a daily struggle it can be to keep it looking good. Hot oil treatments are an excellent way to restore shine, condition the hair and scalp; and repair damaged hair.

I usually associate hot oil treatments with VO5 Hot Oil, which I then associate with being a teenager and the vast amount of bad hair that came with it but many stylists recommend a once weekly treatment to keep your locks in great shape and after doing a little research I found that you can skip the salon or chemist all together and use two items from your kitchen cupboard instead. Combine 3 tablespoons of olive oil with 1 tablespoon of liquid honey–and voila, you’ve got the spa at home with a homemade hot oil treatment! The natural oils found in both olive oil and honey add needed moisture to thirsty, dry hair and help repair split ends and damage caused by  hair dryers and flat irons. One tip: I would suggest doing it over a bathtub or in the shower, it can get a bit messy.

Here’s how to make your own Homemade Hot Oil Treatment in 5 steps:

1) Combine olive oil and honey in a saucepan and heat the mixture over a medium-high heat until it boils.

2) Take the saucepan away from the heat and allow the mixture to cool down. Stir the olive oil and honey so they’re well blended.

3) Distribute the honey and olive oil mix onto your hair, combing it through gives the best results.

4) Wrap your hair in a towel or put it up in a plastic shower cap and leave the treatment on for between 15 and 30 minutes.

5) Rinse out the hot oil treatment and shampoo and condition your hair as you normally would.

The result is rejuvenated tresses—Promise!
