Chanel has been ordered to pay the now-bankrupt World Tricot €200,000 in damages for stealing a design back in 2009. This is just the latest news from the ongoing legal battle between the two companies, which all started with a white crochet fabric.
World Tricot was a small company that produced high-end knits and were once a supplier to Chanel. Initially World Tricot took Chanel to court for €1.6million for breach of contract and €2.85million for counterfeiting.
The original decision went to Chanel and the whole case was publically dismissed as a bid for attention from the small company. World Tricot were ordered to pay just over €200,000 for 'public disparagement'.
Just last Friday this decision was reversed, with the judge saying, 'a visual comparison of the original and the crocheted Chanel vest shows that the vest is a slavish copy." World Tricot's founder, Carmel Colle, burst into tears as the judgement was announced saying it was recognition for those working behind the scenes in the fashion industry.
Though Chanel has not confirmed whether it will appeal the decision, they were eager to state that this is not the norm for the fashion power-house. "This is the first time we have faced this kind of situation, although we work with close to 400 suppliers. This very specific case is in no way [a] reflection of the quality of our relations with our suppliers."
World Tricot were suppliers to Christian Dior, Christian Lacroix and Givenchy before Chanel got on board. They soon became the company's biggest client but when they spotted their design in a Chanel store and lodged a complaint, the fashion house drastically cut down their orders. World Tricot is now in compulsory liquidation.
