Well already some parents are purchasing these very controversial shoes! Michael Kors has now unveiled the Keely Wedge for six to ten year olds. Little girls can now enjoy options from online retailer Zappos.com such as the brown boho-style espadrille which has three-inch heels and is encrusted with sparkle rhinestones. Shocked?
Three years ago when Suri Cruise was seen wearing heels experts explained why they considered high heeled shoes for kids to be a health risk. “The fact children can wear these is worrying,” said podiatrist Gregor McCoshim. “Any heel above 2cm increases the risk of twisting an ankle. Wearing them can cause strains in the back which is a potential problem for their growth and development. ”
However, despite a number of podiatrists making similar claims it still appears heels for little girls outside the dress-up box are becoming progressively more popular.
One review for a pair of Michael Kors wedges read: “So cute my child saw theme and as soon as possible she threw off her shoes and started strutting it. She was so cute. I bought them she would not take them off... But cost a lot of money!”
Now it should be mentioned that Michael Kors is not the first designer to market heels to a younger segment. The Jessica Simpson Kids and Steve Madden Kids range also make heels for girls but it appears it is the Michael Kors range that has everybody talking.
Back in 2010 New Look was shunned by parents as they were selling high heels starting at size one which would fit an eight-year-old. These shoes included a pair of £16 dark blue platforms with a 3.5 inch heel.
The Michael Kors range has been compared to other products that are considered to be sexualizing young girls, including a first make-up kit for girls of five, padded bras and a toddler t-shirt from Primark adorned with the slogan 'Future
