The Burberry Prorsum show was undoubtedly the most anticipated event of London Fashion Week, with many a famous Brit lined up to attend and thankfully designer Christopher Bailey delivered with aplomb. It's clear the label is heading in a new direction while maintaining the classic look it's known for, notably the trench coat but in this show Bailey focused on the emerging hot trend of SS13 that is the cape, which came in full length, calf length and capelet in a variety of colour and ranged from contemporary classic to futuristic.
The collection was a visual feast with oodles of colour, bold raspberries, metallic greens and eye catching dark blues were a stark contrast to the monochrome dominance at New York Fashion Week. Bailey mixed old English glamour using peplum here and there, pencil skirts and classic capes with elements of techno - ruched fabrics, metallics and foil-like materials. The tone of the show was set when the first look emerged on the runway; a full white cape over a satin pink ruched bodysuit, shades and silver stilettos. From there Bailey took the collection through a veritable colour explosion.
It was the trench that stole the show; the classic design was given an ultra-modern remix with lace, two tone colour and shiny metallic versions of the iconic coat. The accessories - oversized candy coloured bags - gave an outstanding supporting performance complimenting each look they were paired with.
After the show Bailey was surrounded by the A-list elite which included Anna Wintour, One Direction's Harry Styles and Harvey Weinstein, eager to congratulate him on an outstanding show which was streamed live to the new Burberry store on Regent Street. To awaiting reporters Bailey said: “The collection was a bit more joyful and quite sassy and a bit sexy... It’s about taking those kind of authentic signature DNA elements from what Burberry is about, our heritage and our history. But then making them, of the moment and kind of giving them a spirit."
