Chanel No. 5, the iconic scent from the fashion and beauty house has been associated with iconic actresses of the silver screen throughout it's 91 year history. From Marilyn Monroe's confession that it was all she wore between the sheets way back in 1953 to the breath-taking mini film shot by Nicole Kidman and directed by Baz Lurhman in 2003, the perfume is universally considered a symbol of an ultimate feminine classic luxury. So join me in being a tad surprised at Chanel's recent bold move to select Mr Jolie himself, Brad Pitt, as the new face of the fragrance.

In what may be the first instance of a man promoting a female perfume three teaser commercials have been revealed on Chanel's YouTube page with Brad seductively whispering phrases such as “Do Fou Feel Lucky?”, “Are You Going Somewhere?” and “What’s The Mystery?”. While Brad could easily sell most of us binliners, the mind certainly boggles at the $7 million paycheck he'll pick up for this Chanel campaign from what we've seen so far.

Yet Chanel appears confident the Moneyball star is a perfect choice to front their campaign. "No. 5 is the most iconic fragrance of our time, and Brad Pitt is the most iconic actor of our time," boasted the brand in a press statement. "To keep a legend fresh, you always have to change its point of view. It is the first time we've had a man speaking about a women's fragrance," Andrea d'Avack, a Chanel spokesman, said recently. "We think very much that the perfume is a seduction between a man, a woman and the perfume. No. 5 is our leading fragrance, and we are willing to make the investment to keep it on that level."

The full commericial will air on the brand's YouTube Chanel on October 15th (along with Pitt's answers to those pressing questions raised in the teasers) with long-time Chanel director Joe Wright at the wheel. Wright has also directed films such as the upcoming Anna Karenina and Atonement with former face of Chanel Keira Knightley
