Make-up is supposed to be fun and most beauty buffs I know revel in the idea that expirementing with new shades, tones and trends on a beautiful blank face palette is exciting and gets our creative streak buzzing. So with the cold weather already setting in (pushing aside any doubt that it ever left), it’s the perfect time of year to start playing with autumn colours and getting our winter make up ritual under way.

This season’s trends and how to make them work for you:

Bright Eyes

Whether it was golden hues, bright and bold blues, enviable greens or promiscuous purples, the biggest trend that made its way along the Autumn/Winter 2012/3 catwalks this year was the bright and multicoloured smokey-eyes. Taking a spin off the usual dark coloured smokey-eye makeup, designers across the board blended a multitude of colours to create the fun and unique look that’s set to take this Autumn beauty world by storm.

Day: For a subtle, daytime look, use light coloured tones for your smokey-eye. Keep the lashes natural and add just a touch of eyeliner to define the eye and ensure it doesn’t get lost under the fun and bright colours. Avoid going to heavy on blusher or lipstick and stick to more natural tones.

Evening: Add more layers of colour for the look to take you from day to night. Be more creative with your colour combinations and don’t be afraid to experiment. Add a sweep of eye liner and some luscious false lashes to make the look really stand out.

Winged Liner

What once we called the ‘flick’ is now making a catty comeback. The winged liner can not only lift your eyes, but can elongate your eyes and your lashes but takes a little bit of time to master a clean sweep. Gel formulas are perfect fro this look while an angled liner brush can help achieve the perfect flick.

Day: Keep the liner brush thin against the inner corner of your eye, gently broaden the line so that it grows thicker as you reach the outer corner. Then draw the ‘winged’ look by flicking the end of the line up slightly towards the end of your brow line. For a more subtle day option, use a brown coloured liner.

Evening: Taking the technique to a nighttime look, try and create an overall thicker line starting from the inner corner of your eye once again. For a more dramatic evening look, try using a bright coloured liner.

Red Lips

A classic look made famous by the likes of old Hollywood glamour, the ‘red lips’ look is one trend that returns time and time again. Except this time, it’s with a bare face. As one of the easiest and quickest ways to splash a bit of tasteful colour to your make-up look, experiment with different shades and tones of Red – making it the ideal make-up trend for any colouring.

Day: To gain a more natural red lips effect, try applying the lipstick using your fingers and patting down the colour, which creates a more tinted look. If your lips are dry, try using a small amount of balm to make the lips look more moisturised and natural, Vaseline can work a treat!

Evening: For a more dramatic evening look, go for a bolder, darker red. Using a lip brush will help give you a more defined finish and using a lip liner can help create a more precise lip contour. Add the ‘winged liner’ for a true Hollywood look.
