Right up until Dolce & Gabbana's autumn/winter 2012 collection, I thought the last place I would find fashion inspiration would be in my old art history notes. I was wrong, however, and now every magazine I turn to heralds the sartorial importance of the 1600s and more specifically, the Baroque era.
The design duo embraced the rich history of Domenicio Dolce's native Sicily and presented a decadent collection that ties perfectly into the dark, gothic and mysterious vibe of the season. Ironically, the collection referenced the ancient Baroque religious traditions while managing to make the bygone era sexy and relevant once more. Though, seeing as Dolce & Gabbana are synonymous with va-va-voom, their holy inspired ensembles were anything but demure.
No matter how good those knickerbocker suits and embellished capes might look on the runway, it is best to approach this look with caution to avoid looking like a walking tapestry.
For those who wish to dive in, opt for a figure hugging Baroque-inspired LBD and don't be afraid to layer on the accessories.

For a more paired-down version, team a jacquard peplum, body or bralet with a simple pencil or mini skirt. Likewise, lavish skirts and printed leggings are a good alternative to dress up conservative tops and shirts.

This trend is all about a look-at-me approach to dressing; to take things down a notch but remain fashion forward, incorporate a simple statement piece into your day wear. Try a patterned blazer, studded leather jacket or simple lace top to go with plain black trousers.

To jazz up your party outfits, choose heavy hold chains, black gems and Pat Butcher worthy earrings.

Finally for top marks, invest in a pair of no nonsence studded booties and team with lace ankle socks.
