Think of this season’s asymmetrical hemline trend as the ‘reverse fashion mullet’. So before you advise the young woman that she has her skirt caught in her knickers, hold your tongue. Asymmetric hemlines are a key fashion trend for SS12 so prepare to have hemlines running in a razor sharp 45 degree angle from thigh to mid-calf. Asymmetrical hemlines made their last appearance in the crop top trend, but the style has expanded and now includes cardigans, tank tops, skirts, and dresses. The non-conforming, free flowing hem lines are Bohemian yet sophisticated. Breaking away from the rigid lines of symmetry, designers are freely experimenting with the entire geometry and symmetry involved in the design of dresses and skirts alike. Mary Katrantzou featured a number of beautiful dresses complete with trains, while Missoni cut their hemlines to one side. They were joined on the asymmetric line by Barbara Bui, Jason Wu, Kevork Kiledjian, Kimberly Ovitz, and Rachel Comey. The trend is perfect to add a little drama to your outfit, no major effort is required, just let the asymmetry speak for itself.
